Design intentions
Explanation of Concept The basic concept behind the design of monument is to create a monumental building, which can represent a certain time period of Pakistan’s History. A monument which can enlighten the future generations about the struggle of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for democracy and her vision about a liberal and moderate Pakistani nation. Secondly the motivation behind the design is to create a building which would reflect our age, socio-political influences on our society, a building which can record our modern time history. In this way we can also pay homage to our ancestors who have left us with rich Islamic architectural heritage, which we should value by preserving it instead of replicating their achievements. Design Element The basic plan of the monument is derived from Islamic geometric patterning system. While designing it is strongly considered that the plan influenced by the Islamic geometry will ultimately tranform into a contemporary architecture. The basic plan composed of six equilateral triangles which are united to form a hexagon. The selection of equilateral triangle is influence by the TETRACTYS. The Tetractys is an equilateral triangle formed from the sequence of the first ten numbers in four rows. Tetracyts symbolises the four elements air, water, fire and earth. It is the harmony of the sphere and cosmos. The four rows added up to the ten which was unity of higher order. Equilateral triangle is a strong and stable element ideally symbolises the theme of Benazir’s Democratic movement that all the parties should unite and work together for a higher cause .Secondly in order to gain peace, growth and harmony, all the fractions of our society should get equivalent rights. Monument /Memorial (Plan and structure) Monument is placed on a hexagonal base, which is six feet raised above ground level. Steps around the hexagonal platform will lead towards the monument. The monument is composed of six towers based on equilateral triangles arranged to form a hexagon, as the main central six towers rises from their flat equilateral triangular base, variation occur at each element’s height and volume in an upward spiralling pattern. Height and volume of all towers changes uniformly as it reaches towards the sky by making a conic helix except the tallest tower, one with monumental height.. Each tower is an elongated triangular pyramid sliced at the top. The suggested finishing of towers is ruby red granite symbolize the colour of martyr .Light plays an important role as the tower emits light from different size of star shaped holes from all of its faces. Halogen beam lights will be use to create a dramatic and startling ambience in the night. Towers stands on a water body surrounded by a hexagonal platform. This modest central pool, still and reflective will encourage quiet and contemplation. Six hexagonal areas along the margins of pool allocated for laying wreaths and lighting lamps. Main towers will be encircle by another set of six enclosed halls. Their plan consist of again six equilateral triangles which are overlapping and supporting each other but their volumes and areas are different. Variation of their roof level also create light sources. Skylight on their roof tops transmits maximum daylight from above. Each hall provides entrances from all sides with a monumental height. These halls are interconnected. The enclosed areas of halls features large engraved walls, to commemorate the life of BB and the struggle of democracy in Pakistan. The roofing material of sky light areas should be aesthetically pleasing as well as weather proof . From inside there are wooden pergolas under the skylight areas will create smoothing effect of light and shade. The suggested flooring is light grey concrete with black granite pattern. Sloped walls built up in fare face concrete and crisp granite flooring will enhance its monumental effect.
